"I was an average student academically; that’s where I came from…Then I created this garden that’s internationally known. It shows that a kid who is average academically can still make important contributions to our society. I want people to be aware of that. I want to be able to encourage those students that don’t always get the attention that may give them the courage to go after their own dreams.” Pearl Fryar

Pearl Fryar is dedicated to capturing the attention of at-risk children who do not excel at school and who may be in danger of falling through the cracks. He tells visitors to the garden that he believes a student’s academic performance does not always reflect potential for success. His dream is to inspire youth who have creative abilities and to help them find the confidence to pursue creative goals.

Pearl Fryar believes strongly in the role higher education can play in breaking the cycle of poverty. To realize Pearl’s objective of helping the average student to succeed, the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden, Inc. contributes to scholarship funds at community colleges and technical colleges in South Carolina. Scholarships are awarded to students who might not have done well in high school but who nevertheless show "potential."

Contributions to Pearl’s scholarship fund may be made online via the Garden Conservancy website or by sending correspondence to:

If sending a check, please make it out to the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden, Inc. and write “scholarship” in the memo line.

In early spring 2010, students from the University of California—Los Angeles filmed a short documentary about Pearl’s scholarship program.  View the complete short here:
